The benefits of TKI and where it wins

trapped key interlocking system design

Definitionย

Trapped key interlockingย has been keeping people safeย from hazardous environmentsย for over 100ย years.ย Itย ensures that aย pre-determined process is followed and cannot be circumvented or short cut. The transfer of uniquely coded keys ensures that personnel remain safe regardless of where they are operating on the site.ย

Anย isolationย key is used toย controlย theย process and remains trappedย in the isolator/keyย switchย whilst the machine is running. Theย removal of the isolation keyย isolatesย theย power source.ย When the key is removed, the power is off.ย This (isolation) key is then trapped in either aย key exchange boxย for release of multiple keys or directly in an access lock which retains the key and allows safeย accessย to the dangerous area. This key remains trapped in position while the gate or door is opened and can only be removed when the gate or door has beenย closed and the lock engaged. In this way the key is either trapped when the machine is running and access cannot be gained, or the key is trapped while access isย gained,ย and the machine cannot be started.ย

Historyย

The concept of trapped key interlocking (TKI)ย dates back toย 1893ย whenย French inventor Paulย Bourรฉ created engagement locking devices to ensure safeย track switching operations.ย Two years later,ย Trayvouย manufacturedย interlocking devices for the manufacturing and the railway industry.ย In 1922,ย the Englishmanย James Harryย Castellย designedย the first interlocking system to protect the people and assets during the electrification of London, while R.L.ย Kirkย is the first to pioneer the use of key interlocking on circuit breakersย and switches in early 1930’s.ย  ย  ย

Where it winsย

Despite originallyย being usedย predominantlyย in theย rail sector, trapped key interlockingย has sinceย developed and is nowย utilisedย inย many different and diverseย situationsย acrossย allย sectors. From machine guardingย inย industrialย applicationsย toย the safe operation of switchgear, both HV andย MV/LV, and even inย logistics andย warehousingย to prevent accidents when loading operations are taking place.ย It is, however,ย in harsh environments and heavy applications where trapped key interlocking stands out andย oftenย outperforms many of the alternative solutions such as safety switchesย and sensing technology.ย

To begin with, trapped key interlocking can be mounted easily around the hazardous area and does not require field wiring nor cabling around machinery, assets or equipment. In many cases, a machine will be isolated via a key switch mounted on a control panel or isolation unit, keeping all the electrical wiring well away from the hazardous areas. Sentric’s trapped key interlocking products are built and tested to the highest quality, and are extremely robust, being able to withstand harsh conditions such as high temperatures, adverse weather, dirty, and even wash down areas. They require little maintenance and are proven to work in challenging environments.

Conclusionย

Trapped key interlocking systems have beenย extensivelyย used in different industries and applicationsย for more than 100 years protecting assets, machinery and personnel. Despite the advancements and rising of new technologies, trapped keyย is still relevant andย oftenย remains the best safety solution especiallyย when it comes toย harshย environmentsย and heavy applicationsย where theย need to withstandย adverse conditions is required.ย
